Petition to save Lydney to Chepstow bus service

A petition to save a Forest of Dean bus route from cuts has been handed in to Gloucestershire County Council.

The 755 Lydney to Chepstow service is among those being reviewed by the authority.

The Conservative-run county council, which financially supports 170 bus services, is looking to cut £2m from its transport budget by 2013.

Up to 300 people are thought to have signed the petition.

Organiser Marion Winship, district councillor for Alvington, Aylburton and West Lydney, said: “There are people in the village who can’t get to the doctor or the chemist, hospital or the schools or the leisure centre or the shops unless they’ve got a bus service. 

“If the bus service into Lydney, which is four times a day at the moment, is cut further it will make it more difficult for them.”

A county council spokeswoman said the petition would be looked at in due course.

County councillor Stan Waddington said in May the authority could not afford to continue subsidising services that were poorly used and could be better served by other means.
